What is Brake Drum

The brake drum is generally made of a special type of cast iron that is heat-conductive and wear-resistant. It is positioned close to the brake shoe without actually touching it, and rotates with the wheel and axle. When a driver applies the brakes, the lining pushes against the inner surface of the drum, generating friction heat that can reach as high as 600 °F (316 °C).
